While I find sniping somewhat sneaky and annoying, I don't think there's
anything "legally" wrong with it, nor with ending the auction early if he
wants people to put in their "real" bids.

I now deal with sniping the way eBay suggests: put in the amount that I
would be willing to bid up to and let proxy bidding take care of it. If no
else bids or snipes higher, I lose nothing. If a sniper comes in between the
current and max bid, he gets squelched. If he goes higher than my max price,
then fine, it's his.

Note: "dropping" the auction only works when the auctioneer is selling for
another party. If he wants to sell his own stuff to his friend, let him go
ahead - they don't even need eBay. :-)
