From Japanese ! I was accustomed to the old fashioned expression "depht of
field" but it seems bokeh takes into account more variables...
Bokeh, in short, is a shape and distribution of light in out of focus
images. Pleasant bokeh is a result of slightly undercorrected spherical
aberration, unpleasant one (showing itself as e.g. double lines)
is caused by overcorrected aberrations (typical to some Nikon glass).
Shape of oof is controlled by shape od diaphragm opening.

Lens with good bokeh should give following distribution
of energy in image of out of focus light point:
