Use a 7mm Extension tube on the front (i.e. the bayonet mount) of the lens,
which turns the lens from an automatic- into a manual-aperture.

NB, NOT an Auto Extension Tube. A longer extension tube might also work,
but might also be visible in the corners of the image.

how does one operate the aperture on the lens when using a reversing ring?

playing around with the 18mm last night, I was able to hold it reversed
against the AT and focus on the smallest things! if I didn't know that I
could do it, I probably would not have had the patience to find the
unbelievably small focusing point.
