Hi all-

It seems that my Vivitar 283 flash will only fire (hot-shoe) on the
Manual/Spot setting. Correct?

Not certain it will *only* fire from the hot-shoe in that mode, but it *is* the mode you should use with it. Put switch in that mode and shutter speed on "electronic" 1/60th or slower (the blue shutter speeds). X-sync is 1/60th, but you can "drag the shutter" to 1/30th hand held and increase exposure for distant background ambient lighting. To some extent it's much like increasing distant background luminance by about one f-stop and can help keep it from looking like a cavern with slower films.

BTW, 1/30th (or 1/25th) were the focal plane shutter sync speeds for flash bulbs (M-sync and F-sync). Burn duration was much, much longer than the duration of electronic flash.

IMPORTANT NOTE:
Ensure your Viv 283 is of the *newer* version as the old ones ran several hundred volts across the trigger contacts!!!! There was some consternation with the advent of camera bodies having electronic flash and flash triggering during the late '70's early 80's with old flash units frying their electronics.

Anyone know the whereabouts of a 1-4n screen for sale?

Check the stock John H. has at Camtech ( http://www.zuiko.com )

Any opinions on the S Zuiko 35-70 3.5-4.5 (other than it is slow!)

It's the slowest and least expensive of the "true" Zuiko 2X wide-tele zooms and was considered an "economy" lens. It's also the smallest and lightest among them (the "true" Zuiko's). I rank them in this order:
  35-70/3.5~4.5 S Zuiko
  35-70/4 S Zuiko
  35-70/3.6

Unlike nearly all variable aperture lenses, the first one listed is constant aperture when stopped down past f/4.5 (the white dot between the "3.5" and "5.6" aperture markings). It's only variable aperture when used "wide open."

Don't confuse these three with the 35-70/4 AF originally made for the OM-F, or the 35-70/3.5~4.8 made by Cosina with an Olympus name badge and sold with the OM-2000.

Personally, I consider the lens speed of the f/3.6 marginal for my use, which often includes shooting in lower lighting levels. I've "made do" with the 35-105 f/3.5~4.5, but not without some considerable pain trying to focus through the dimmer viewfinder during wedding receptions. It's the reason I just bought the only non-OEM lens I've ever purchased, a 35-105/2.8 Tamron SP. During the day outdoors you should have no problem with the "slower" lenses unless you're in deep shade combined with overcast sky. Even if lighting level isn't an issue, slower lenses display greater depth of field through the viewfinder and can still make critical focusing a little more difficult, especially at the short end of the zoom range.
