Is your friend talking about street photography or general tourist
photography? For street photography as a kind of photography, I wouldn't
go wider than 35 or longer than 50. If you're talking about general
tourist photography, where you will most likely shoot objects and
architecture from the safety of a sidewalk, then you'll do well going
much wider than 35.
