Just received the latest copy of Studio Photography and Design magazine.
This is a rarely interesting "controlled circulation" magazine provided free
to professionals. It is usually devoted to repetitive explanations of why
prominent photographers have quit shooting film, and are exclusively digital
(remember, they exist as an advertising vehicle). Imagine my surprise to
find that a professional, in addition to our own Daniel Troy, is shooting
Olympus!

The photographer is Ian Macdonald-Smith (perhaps one of our UK members can
explain why the D isn't capitalized in part of the article and is in
others.), and is based in Bermuda. Although I've not heard of him (and he
not of me, I suspect), it says he shoots fine art abstract landscapes and
architecture, and has five books. None of the eight photos are abstract,
however. He is apparently mainly a travel photographer.

"On the road, he packs lean, which, at the moment, means a mix of digital
and film gear," the article says, "and he's in the process of migrating to
all-digital in the coming months. [remember, in this magazine, we always
appologise for the use of film] Thrilled with his Olympus E-20 and C-5050
and fuji S2 Pro digital cameras, he'll hold on to his Olympus OM4 film
cameras [sorry,Tom, no deals here] for those times when he's out of
electricity range and the only way to shoot is with film." God forgive you
should be reduced to using film!

Here's what it says he shoots: OM4Ti with 8, 18, 21, 24 shift, 28, 35 shift,
35-80, 50-250, 600. Xpan with 45/90. E20, C-5050, Fuji finepix S2 Pro.
Travels with powerbook, 1 gig Lexar CF cards, Gitzo and Manfrotto tripods
with Leica ball heads, polarizer and ND filters. Shoots Provia 100F
exclusively [if you are shooting but one film, that's the one] Scans on Fuji
FineScan 2750, soon to be replaced with 5000 [I've got a friend trying to
get info to buy one of these, will keep you informed, they're supposed to be
hot stuff]. Prints on Epson 2000, 2200, and 7500. Website in development at
imacsmith.com.

Oh, and the photos? Technically superior, if just a bit predictable.

Quick, somebody call Pop Photo. There's a pro that doesn't shoot Canon!
