I believe ...

Perspective distortion comes from viewing a picture at a much different
distance than from where the camera was. Changes in lens focal length
just change the cropping.

If you put your eyeball up close and personal it will see the
perspective distortion but your brain will seldom interpret it to be
unexpected.
