You need a download manager. They keep track of the download and can pick up where it left off when the connection is lost. I have DSL, so it isn't a problem for me now, but I remember having that capability in the dark days of dial-up and finding it essential. Dan Mitchell just posted a recommendation for one.

Upload and download are the same speed on dial-up, at least on the several I've used over the years. On home cable and DSL, they generally split up the bandwidth to give faser download and slower upload. Upload on home connections is generally 126-256 kpbs, I think. My cable modem hook-up was 256k up, but the download speed was so variable, sometimes amazingly slow, that I'm much happier with the consistent download faster than the cable ever managed even though upload is only 128k. I gather this stuff varies not only with provider, but by neighborhood.

Dreamer...... Slow dial ups have a hard time staying connected long enough to download
anything big. For me generally it's "third time's a charm" for anything that
takes longer than a couple of hours. First I have to wait until i get a decent connection
speed then cross my fingers that i won't get bumped. And aren't uploads slower than
downloads?
