My question is, because I'm going to blow the majority of my $$$ on the vacation, also, because I'll be hiking in non-trails.. I'm thinking about buying a fairly small, fairly cheap tripod. Is that a smart thing to do?

You want *cheap* or *good* tripod? :0)
Except for a carbon fiber ones, lightweight cheapie Taiwanese/Chinese/
Fake-US/Koreanese.. lightweight tripods., made fropm cheap aluminium profiles
with plastic locks and 'fluid heads' are worthless. If you want fairly
cheap and fairly light - buy something like my trusty companion - Benbo Trekker, or Manfrotto (Bogen) 190 with ballhead (I don't know Bogen
deesignation of this model).. If you want lighter - buy a good monopod
or even put tripod thread on trekking pole.

If you want lighter still - buy a small mini-tripod, I used
to like both Leica Mini Tripod and Leica TableTop tripod -
pressed against tree trunk, both are very useful..
Also consider taking beanbag with you.
