An important point . . .
It will go into "auto" mode for duration of the exposure, but shutter speed will be no longer than about 1/30th under those conditions. The mode selection switch must be in the "Auto" position with camera turned on for the AE system to allow longer shutter speeds.

The camera exposure control logic was set up to do this so it wouldn't drain the batteries keeping the shutter open if the shutter release button was inadvertently tripped in a very dark camera bag.
