Hi Guys,

Well, finally it's going to happen, the event I've been waiting for for
several years: the air show at the Enschede Airforce base.

Quite some cool stuff is coming, including no less than 7(!) stunt teams,
amongst which the Red Arrows and Frecce Tricolore. Other than that, there
will be several cool airplanes either on display only, or also in solo
flight. A pretty complete list of attenders can be found at:
http://www.luchtmacht.nl/opendagen2003/shows/ (in Dutch, unfortunately, but
by following the links on the left hand side one can easily see what's
coming). Not listed here, but listed on another page
(http://www.luchtmacht.net/opendagen2003.htm but for some reason at present
it doesn't work for me), is a slightly different program, which also
mentions a Spitfire!

Now... Of course I intent to attend the show, and to take pictures of
course. Film-wise I'll go for Fuji Provia 400F and I may even decide to test
its pushing capabilities. Gear wise I'm not quite certain yet, the body will
definitely be the 4Ti, and lens-wise I was thinking of:
24-2: Overview shots.
35-80/2.8: (general pictures).
100/2: short tele range.
65-200/4: medium tele range.
300/4.5 + tripod: long tele range.
Oly 2xTC?.

O.k., so everything from 24/2 - 65-200/4 will definitely go, but I'm a bit
uncertain as to the 300/4.5 + tripod + TC. In previous years I have taken
pictures with my father's 135/2.8, and at times I found myself wanting to be
able to get that little bit closer. Then, I also know that I will be there
from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m., and that I don't want to overload the camera bag
too much.

So there's definitely a trade off there between a complete set of gear and
comfort. Can any of you guys share some of your experiences in taking
pictures at such shows, and weigh in on how handy esp. the 300/4.5 is? One
further issue I see with the 300/4.5 is that it is not so easy to actually
find something in the viewfinder using a lens that long, then the focusing
mechanism doesn't allow for quick focusing either, so I can imagine people
deeming this lens not very suitable for shooting pictures of jets thundering
by. :)

Thanks in advance, and cheers!
Olafo
