As a longtime driver in deer, elk and moose country (hit more than a few
too) i can add a couple of observations. Deer and to a lesser extent elk
like to graze roadsides. Their brain's wiring is pretty basic, eat and
run and at some times of year, mate. When they see a car coming toward
them the natural instinct is to run away and the clearest path is down
the middle of the road. They can outrun most predators so this is a good
strategy. Problem is they don't realize how fast those cars or trucks
are closing. So if you see a deer along side the road it will 9 times
out of ten jump out in the road and attempt to run away from you. So
slow down even if they are not in the road, they _will_ jump in front of
you..
