This afternoon is the first chance I've had to play with the new
Epson Perfection 3200 Pro scanner I got so I could scan some of my
MF stuff. I'm still on the uphill part of the learning curve with
the new Epson software, plus SilverFast, MonacoEZcolor 2 and some
other things I may or may not need. But I'm having fun.

However, as I'm sure some of you have already surmised, I have
some preliminary observations.

A 3200 d.p.i. scan of 120 Provia 100F captures an absolutely
incredible amount of detail. But a 6x7cm transparency produces a
TIFF file of about 170MB, and a 6x9cm tranny tops 190MB. That's
three, maybe four, pictures per CD. Whoa, Nellie! I think I'm
going to be fairly selective about what I choose to scan.

This is exactly where one of my main problems with digital comes
from: the whopping amount of storage capacity necessary and the
problem with finding stuff after it's stored. I've got most all
of my trannies and negatives, both medium format and 35mm, in
plastic pages in binders. I'm not a record keeper, and don't
intend to become one, either on a computer or elsewhere. I'm
perfectly happy being a disorganized slob, and I remain zealously
committed to that way of life for the rest of my days. I don't
file; I pile. I truly believe that organized people are just to
damn lazy to look for stuff.

But I can flip through these piles of pages of negatives and
slides looking for a particular photograph at the rate of about
one page every three or four seconds. Try that on your Umpty
Gigahertz Wombat IV thing with the blue screen of death lurking in
the shadows.

So, I think my modus operandi will be to just scan what I want to
tinker with a little bit and/or print right now and keep all the
rest exactly where it belongs. I may not be able to remember
exactly where I thought it belonged last time I put it exactly
where I thought it belonged, but I bet I can find it.

Walt
