Umm. "The face that launched a thousand ships" was Helen of Troy, and the ancient sources all report that she didn't look like an ancient mariner. Not at all.

The phrase is from Marlowe's "Dr. Faustus." Mephistopheles gives him a glimpse at the famous Helen and perhaps a bit of a romp.
