Chuck;

I like your rumor!

I think the item in question in the pix is the 1.4X rather than the tube. If
you look here:
http://www.imaging-resource.com/NEWS/1056430800.html
about 2/3 of the way down you'll see. BTW, this I think is the best source of
info on the E-1 I've seen yet.

Yes, I also believe that it's the extension tube. I have a slightly
higher resolution shot of the E-1 group that JH posted and after
enlarging it and sharpening it a bit I can tell that:

1) The orientation of the red mounting dot matches the E-1 lenses. Even
assuming that an OM lens would physically fit on the E-1 mounting
flange, if you tried to install an OM lens by aligning red dots the OM
bayonet flange would not be properly aligned. If this was truly an OM
adapter I think this detail would be correct for an OM lens.

2) The little glint of brass just inside the mount on the left side
appears (in my magnified image) to resolve into three brass dots. They
are in exactly the correct position to be the leftmost 3 of the 9 E-1
lens electrical contacts.

I'm sure Olympus has a bunch of OM adapters in the lab. After all, what
did they use for lenses in the lab for early testing of the camera
prototypes? Unfortunately, they have no motivation to sell them but I'm
sure somebody will make an OM adapter for us.

Now here's a great thought if you want to assume that the E-1 and OM
bayonet mount are the same and also ignore the red dot's position!
Imagine that the E-1 extension tube is exactly the correct thickness to
serve as an OM adapter. How's that for a rumor!!!
