[OM] Further comment on 4/3 sensor pixel size and lens resolution

Subject: [OM] Further comment on 4/3 sensor pixel size and lens resolution

The other day I posted some Kodak supplied data on the 4/3 system which showed a design point of about 4.9 microns for lens resolution which would equate to a sensor with 12 megapixels. I took it that this was probably the upper end for planned resolution on the 4/3 sensor. It would not make sense to have a sensor with more pixels than the lens could resolve.

Later on, however, I encounterd some other banter being quoted from an Olympus rep which stated that the "theoretical" resolution of the 4/3's lenses was in the 1-2 micron range. This poses an interesting question. Will 4/3 lenses be limited to resolving 4.9 microns because of sensor and/or practical lens manufacturing considerations or will they really be able to do better than that? If we invest in these expensive lenses will they ultimately be delivering 24 megapixels on the E-5?

I also spotted a rumor that Nikon is considering a line of digital design lenses for a full frame sensor which, because of the need for a wide-mouthed mount to control incidence angle, would not be compatible with the existing Nikon mount. Sounds like a good rumor for Olympus.
