That would apperar to be what Kodak (sensor) and Oly (camera & lenses) have attempted with the E-1. Lower noise, higher D-range and higher iso are specifically promoted as virtues of the E-1. Whether they will succeed to the extent necessary for the system to be a commercial success, only time will tell.

The result is that many are carping about the lack of megapixels based on speculation, rather than performance. Remindes me of other speed, watt and horsepower 'wars' that focused on only one performance measure in automobiles, electronics, computers, etc.......... In a past life, I sold and did other things to electronics, including stereo equipment. When people came in look for the 'best sounding system', I sould Switch through various systems with progressivily better sound, I would finally switch to the lowest power receiver (14w/channel, I think), and the best speakers. They would love the sound, but when I showed them how big the speakers were (good speakers in the 60s were big and rather efficient.) and how cheap and unimpressive looking and low speced the receiver was, they would end up with book shelf speakers and a 60w per channel amp (big in those days). A poorer sounding system, but they could talk specs with their visitors and the speakers fit convieniently into the living room.

I hope the sensor/camera companies would research less noise, better D-range, high ISO performance next, and not worry too much about 20MP, or 30MP chips....
