My method is a combination of the methods mentioned but not quite as formal.

First, I find that I've gotten really used to the different feel when
winding an empty body and winding one with film in it (you can feel greater
resistance when it's loaded). This may have come from an experience I had
about 6 years ago with an old Praktika that would only randomly wind the
film.

The other thing I do is always wind the film once with the back open. I
can't tell you how many times that has saved me from mis-loading a roll. I
used to just slip it in and close the back and then wind up to the first
frame. However, sometimes the film would slip off right away and other times
it might slip off a frame or 2 into the winding. If you wind one frame with
the back open you will be able to see if the film is winding properly and
can fix any problems with it slipping off. Yes, this will waste a frame of
film. I've always been able to get at least 36 frames using this method but
I know if you just slip the film in and close the back you would get 1 extra
frame (so 37 or 38 frames on a roll of 36). Personally, I think the piece of
mind that the film is loaded properly is worth more than the 1 extra frame.

I also have a tendency to shoot frame 1 as a wind on frame but that's more
just by accident and I'm working on that. On my last shooting trip I made
sure to not use frame 1 as a wind on frame. With a bit more practice I
should be able to break myself of the habit.
