I've been using cable releases on them for some time when they're mounted in a flash bracket and on a tripod: OM-1n, OM-2n, OM-2S and OM-4. The only one that makes me a little nervous is the OM-4 with the rotating switch under the shutter release. The OM-4's shutter release button also has a different, domed shape compared to the others. It's much like a "soft release" button. I don't use the OM-4 in the flash bracket any more, only the OM-1n, 2n and 2S. On a tripod, I'm very careful with the cable release, especially with the OM-4. Don't screw a cable release into the socket tightly on any camera; just turn it until it's snug. When pressing the plunger, do so gently!

My guess is most of the damage is caused by:
(a) over-torquing the cable into the socket
(b) ramming the plunger forcefully
(c) hitting cable barrel while it's screwed into the shutter release

If you are mounted on a tripod, take a cable release

I remember having read somewhere (in a post by John H., I guess) that a cable release is not recommended on an OM, because it can very easily damage the shutter release.

Am I mistaken?
