Since the Epic is weatherproof, I suspect it might float, at least for a
minute, which would seriously throw off the test results. Maybe someone with experience can verify.

Some of you may recall (two winters ago I think) my Epic tale of near woe. It was probably March and the ground was frozen. We had a very heavy rain and water was cascading down the surrounding hillside and into the street.

There is a large sewer grating at the end of my driveway and the rain was washing all sorts of leaves and other debris down the street as well. Eventually it clogged the grate and the water level started rising very fast. It was threatening to come up my driveway and into my garage.

I ran outside to clear the debris from the grate forgetting that I had my Epic in my shirt pocket. I had nearly cleaned all the debris away. I was still bent over the grate with my hands in the water when the Epic suddenly fell out of my pocket and escaped out the top of my partially zipped jacket.

It fell directly into the water which was now swirling around like a whirlpool. It was not floating but, because it was horizontal as it was swirling around it did not drop through the grate. Fortunate since, if it was vertically oriented, it would have easily fallen through.

I did some panicky groping around for perhaps 3-5 seconds while I tried to catch it on its merry rounds. When I retrieved it I immediately took in into the house and dried the exterior. I opened the battery compartment and removed the battery and found no water. I opened the clamshell and discovered 2 or 3 drops of water inside. Upon opening the back I discovered no water inside. I do not remember now whether it had film in it or not.

I thought sure it was a goner. In fact it was perfectly OK and remains so to this day. Oly has some interesting stuff on their Japanese site on the technology of weather sealing. The new E-1 has lots and lots of seals.
