I suspect most of the macro lenses stick out far enough from the camera
that there would be a shadow cast by the lens in the image.

You're probably right when using the 50mm or 90mm macro to frame a large
flower there wouldn't be a shadow in it. The T32 manual uses a cat's
head as an example of when to use the tilt down. I suspect that all of
the macro lenses especially those on the telescoping tube would have
problems when focused very close.

The discussion got me to thinking about getting a large white plastic
diffuser (similar to the IS macro flash attachment) that I could slide
into my Cokin P filter mount, or in an emergency even holding a piece of
white paper near the front of the lens. There's definitely some things
to experiment with that might give softer lighting than the macro
flashes.

A friends Min*lta wonder brick SLR has a built in flash that is worse
than useless. With a Tamron 28-xxx lens, if you don't force the flash to
not fire you get a massive shadow. The flash tube in the Olympus T
flashes is probably positioned further in front of the camera though and
perhaps slightly higher. The built in flash of the IS is also probably
closer to the lens axis.
