Steve,
Are you certain it's a PX76a?? See the following web page (got to it through the Nik*n Historica Society):
  http://www.nikonhs.org/tech_articles/battery.html

My vote goes to the C.R.I.S. adapter (http://www.criscam.com/).
I'm using them in an OM-1n, Rollei 35S and Weston Ranger 9.

It's off-topic because he has N*kon F's. The Original F with the Photomic Ftn finder. The meter is in the finder, and takes two px76 mercury cells. What he has in one camera is px76a alkaline batteries. I know the alkalines don't work properly in the OM-1 because there's no voltage regulator, but does anyone know if they will work in my Dad's N*kon? Or should he go with a Wein cell, Criscam (sp?) or other route?

Thanks, Steve Goss, Dallas, Tx usa
