I've never been to that part of the world, nor traveled on a tour, so I have to make some assumptions:

Lots of light during all the daytime tour excursions.
Limited time to set up equipment shots.
Some visits to sites where one must carry everything for lengthy periods.
An interest in actually seeing and interacting emotionally with 'once in a lifetime' places while there. Most pics will have the primary purpose of memoralizing the experience, rather than being works of art.
Air conditoined motor coaches and hotels.

Given all that, I would likely take a fairly minimal kit, something like:

- 2 OM-4Ts, not only to have back-up, but to hold 2 different films.
- Tokina 35-200/3.5-4.5, a proven travel companion.
- Vivitar S.1 19-35/3.5-4.5, a proven travel companion,
- Zuiko 50/1.4, for a bit of speed.
- Vivitar Macro Focusing Teleconverter, makes the 50/1.4 into a 100/2.8 macro to 1:1 - Lowe PhotoRunner shoulder/fanny pack into which all of the above except extra body fits nicely along with film, batteries, filters, etc.
- Velbon 343e tripod
- Mostly Portra 160 or Supra 200, some Portra or Supra 400 and a little Supra 800, films I know and trust, except the Supra 200 is new.

Other things that would tempt me:
- Sigma 600/8, for that special perspective and those far away things.
- Add 35-105/3.5-4.5 (Zuiko for weight and style? Tamron for speed?) and replace 35-200 with Tamron SP 60-300/3.8-5.4
- Leki walking stick with monopod head, beat museum tripod bans?
- Recently CLAed OM-1, paranoia.

For casual use where I don't want the full kit, group in restaurants, etc.
- XA with A11, love it, but limited, no portraits, closeups, etc
- or Zuiko 35-70/3.5-4.5 and T18, uses the existing bodies, but kinda big.
- or the Can*n S110, if taking along the laptop (or maybe just with more memory cards?)
- or I might seriously consider buying something like a Stylus Epic 115.

OK. I've resisted doing this until now, but here goes. The trip in
question is: Seattle to Cairo, to Jerusalem (and surrounds), to Jordan and
home...
Total trip duration approximately three weeks. Part of a Holy Lands tour
group hosted by the Sr. Pastor at my church (he's lead probably 15 tours
over the past 25 years).

Consider the slate blank. Body, lens, film,'pod',case, it's all open for
discussion at this point. No replies/suggestions discounted without
opportunity for rebuttal.

For what the trip is costing us (it's my wife and my thirtieth anniversary
gift to each other), I believe I can consider acquiring anything suggested
(that merits consideration that is) that I don't currently have. There. It's open season on Jim.
