To native Washingtonians, Californian transplants are both "troppo" AND
"seppo"... Like the lady (this was about winter, 1980-81) who had a tire
store install heavy v-bar winter tire chains on her Jaguar because of heavy
snow in the north end (up Jim Timpe way). She then drove about 15 miles
home (to Bellevue, where else?), all the while tearing living hell out of
the Jag's rear fenders. I couldn't believe my eyes. She wanted us (State
Farm Insurance) to pay for the repairs under her comprehensive coverage. No
deal. She demanded to see my supervisor. Ditto, no deal. Surely she must
have HEARD the damage being done within the first block she drove. There is
only about an inch or two clearance around the wheels on a Jag as it is.
The tire store was seriously negligent to have installed those chains on
that car in the first place. A totally incorrect application. But SHE was
truly DUMB to have driven the car with the chains - esp. THOSE chains -
installed. I told her to go back to the tire store and raise bloody hell.
That was her only hope re: damages.

Whenever it snows in Seattle, the "Californians" stand out from the crowd,
turning down steep, icy streets (in their 4WD SUVs, of course) and sliding,
wheels locked, all the way down, crashing into the other 6 Californians
already in a crumpled pile at the bottom. Or burning up their screaming
tires at 2 in the morning trying to go UP those same steep, icy streets (the
sloppy, wet Seattle snow freezes at night into glare ice, lasting well into
the morning commute - fun). Burn up tires on ice? Better believe it.

We love Californians... except when they move up here... then they are
"troppo" and "seppo"... I'll have to remember those words. :-)
