I think the more pernicious problem, might be that spammers have figured out how to harvest ebay. Could they and are the obvious scam emails, simply be validation of the derived email addresses?

I send all suspect ebay email to:
spoof@xxxxxxxx.
In the last month I have received 4 emails that look very official asking
for account info.  They have veiled threats in them: "your account is in
jeopardy".  I just send 'em off to ebay.  Gotten some very nice email back
from ebay, assuring me that they're looking into the problem.
