Check out prices on a Nik*n FM, FE or FE2. They tend to be less than the FM2[n] which ceased production only just recently. For a student, any one of them would be more than fine. Pentax K-1000 has already been mentioned. There were some K-Mount variants that would also work if finding a K-1000 in decent condition is difficult (do a search on the web for the Pentax User Group). There are also the Can*n manual focus bodies that used the FD mount lenses:

AT-1 All manual with match needle
AE-1 Manual and shutter priority AE
AE-1P Same as AE-1 with additional Program Mode
A-1 Pro grade version of the "A" bodies with all modes.
AV-1 Manual and aperture priority AE
AL-1 Same as AV-1 with a focus "assist" (not recommended)

I *don't* recommend any of the "T" series.
