William Thomson, Lord Kelvin, who discovered the lower limit of
temperature to be -273.15degC, after whom the absolute scale of
temperature is named and who, together with James Prescott Joule,
discovered the Joule-Thomson cooling effect used in refrigeration and
cryogenics. Lord Kelvin later went on to run the operation which layed
the first transatlantic telephone cable. Also (in)famous for his speech
to the Royal Society, a recording of which I have personally listened
to, in which he declared "There is nothing new to be discovered in
physics now. All that remains is more and more precise measurement."
although he did acknowledge that some loose ends such as the odd effects
reported by Rutherford needed cleared up! A few years later Einstein
published his paper on relativity, Plank proposed quantum theory and the
rest is history!

Quite possibly! If you pop into Westminster Abbey you will find he has
been waiting there with Isaac Newton, Charles Darwin and a few other
buddies for some time! ;-)
