I never could get much satisfaction from metering off the palm of my hand,
nor from using a gray card. Both are awkward to use IMO. But with the
spotmeter on the OM2s, I can almost always find something in the area that
is about 18 0ray to meter. It works well for me, and I shoot mostly slides.
You can do the same with the OM1n, you just need to find a bigger "spot", or
move in so the spot fills the frame for the metering.

I've never had or used the multi-spot metering, so I'm probably missing
something, but I suspect you can just as quickly meter several spots with
the OM2s, unless your shooting from a tripod. Keep in mind no matter how
many spots you meter, you can only shoot to please one of them, and all the
OM bodies are equal in that respect (barring the fill flash option).

I live near the ocean, so do a lot of shooting around beaches and water,
with very difficult metering problems sometimes. If I don't have
spotmetering with me, I just get the water or bright sand or deep shade out
of the picture for metering, then recompose. Green grass or unshaded grey
rock cliffs work fine around here, and we seem to have lots of both.
