With chargers you might want to check if they will work on 220v without a
voltage converter. You may just require a plug adapter rather than a
transformer to get your kit working. If they are based on switchmode they
should be able to work with worldwide voltages. Things like laptop PSU's
almost always work worldwide.
I think that the type of converters you are describing can only be used for
short periods of time (like when you use a hairdryer for a couple of
minutes). I believe that they are not suitable for continuous usage.
If you have a 12v adapter/step up transformer you will want to check the
charging times and the recommended maximum usage times. I have a car charger
for my Metz 45 but it takes something like 20 hours to do a normal charge
for that unit. On mains it takes way less.
So the bottom line is that you might well find that sourcing a regional
psu/charger for your kit and then sell it at the end of your trip. Then you
can be sure that your kit is going to be working safely and correctly.
Certainly there are transformers out there that would do this job but they
tend to be expensive in comparison to getting the right PSU's.

I'm going to NZ with my US equipment. I have a voltage converter, but it
says for use with heating element equipment like hair dryers and curling
irons. Is it safe to plug battery chargers into it? Will it work? Would it
be better to use a 12VDC converter in the rental car to power these
chargers?
