I ground the front threads off a couple of Tiffen filters, an 812
and a red enhancer, to add to my set of rear filters for my Tamron
300/2.8. No problem. But the same idea probably won't work with
a polarizer. Since most of them come in a rotating mount, the
whole package is a lot thicker than a regular filter, and I doubt
you could shave enough off one to make it fit. The Tamron
polarizer made for the filter holder is simply a regular threaded
filter that you just screw around one way or the other in the
holder for the desired rotation. And it's really not much of a
problem to orient it. Just look through the filter while rotating
it in the filter holder until you get the desired effect, then
drop it in and you're good to go.
