I've learned that in Japan, actually. There's tea and hot water in every hotel room (not english kettle though..). Very convenient and very comfy indeed.

Also in Australia it is considered a requirement that every motel and hotel room has the makings - electric kettle, tea, coffee, cups, UHT milk - so that you can make yourself a really nasty cuppa. Electric kettles here were predated in the mists of time (they are found in antique stores!) by ceramic electric jugs with bare immersion elements and a lid design so that you had to disconnect the cord before filling or pouring. Even now, little plastic electric jugs are omnipresent.
