Greetings All,
Many thanks to all of you sending words of encouragement re Isabel.
As of Monday morning it appears it will take a turn to the North, so all of
you up that way take heed...this is going to be an historic storm.
Having lived all my life in coastal South Carolina I've experienced
a lot of these storms and it's pretty funny how my attitude toward them has
changed as I've grown older. When I was a kid they were GREAT. We got out of
school early and maybe had a few extra days off. With the power out for a
few days it was like a camping adventure. Dad would set up the Coleman stove
on the back porch and we cooked all our meals outside...and of course we
feasted on Spam and Vienna Sausages (please no threads on my account) with
lots of grits (definitely NO threads). Even in my teens and early 20's I
still looked forward to their appraoch. The air was full of adventure tinged
with a bit of fear. In the aftermath, the recovery and cleanup brings
neighborhoods together. Groups of families get together to cook in the
garage or driveway. Dinner was what ever was thawing out first: out come the
shrimp and steaks. And of course Americans like their brew cold so drink'em
while their still frosty.
Now as I approach 50 with a wife, three children, and a house in
harm's way, my attitude is ...Stay the hell away! I want no part of it. I
know, I know...why don't you move? I love the coastal lowcountry. The hot
steamy summers only make me appreciate the cool winters even more. I love
the smell of pluff mud at low tide even though (or perhaps because) it makes
the tourists gag. And of course our best kept secret, the best tasting
oysters in the world.
Well I've rambled too much. Once again, if you live from Myrtle
Beach, SC to Long Island, NY keep your batteries dry and your eyes peeled.
Don't ignore this storm.

Good luck old bean. I had to evacuate from Florida only once, but it
was a difficult (albeit exciting) time. I hope that they built your
home properly.
