I think its not wise to have button batteries touching each other inside the film canister.... furthermore, plus if U throw in a battery compartment cap , or a coin to open them , all these metal objects can create a circuit.....

I also carry some of my spare batteries in a film cannister. I carry four batteries as two pairs with the pair formed by taping two together with a thin strip of transparent tape around their rims. This makes them easier and quicker to handle when replacing them.

To form a circuit you would need some collection of metal objects in contact with each other forming a chain between the positive and negative terminals of at least one battery. This would require a minimum of two batteries to form a chain that could also be in contact with the poles of a third battery.

My method of taping two together allows me to carry four batteries in the cannister without fear of short circuits since they behave as two objects instead of four. But you are right about the danger of adding a coin or compartment cap. A third metal object could cause a short.
