Let's get this straight: a 300mm will always be a 300mm. The field of view will be comparable to that of a 600mm on a fullframe sensor, but it's still a 300mm lens. If we're talking DoF in the end product (a print) the 300/2.8 will behave like a 600/5.6, NOT like a 600/2.8 If we're talking speed a 300/2.8 on "half frame" will be faster than a 600/4 for the same ISO, but a fullframe sensor would have larger pixels, allowing for less noise/higher ISO. In fact I believe a fullframe with a *600/5.6*would get comparable results to a 300/2.8 on half frame. The 600/4 on fullframe would be no contest.

There simply is no substitute for aperture when it comes to light gathering power and small DoF! The 600/4 has at least a 150mm diameter lens element, the 300/2.8 slightly more than 100mm. I know which one sounds like the better deal to me, but I probably wouldn't want to carry it.
