I guess it all comes down to the actual numbers. The low pass filter
removes very closely spaced variations without affecting those not as
closely spaced. If they found they needed to use a low pass filter with
the current resolution of lenses it seems strange to me they would
increase the lens's ability to provide even more closely spaced
variations. The lens has to be high quality, but it doesn't need to
produce high MTF ratings at line spacings that are going to be filtered
out to avoid aliasing. I guess since resolution is measured at the image
and as you say a smaller sensor has to have a higher resolution, the
current sensors have low pass filters that cut off spatial frequencies
significantly sooner than what is optimal for the E1. They are hopefully
aiming for lens resolution that will support even better sensors.

It is very encouraging that they are trying to give the lenses more
resolution. If a new sensor can support it, you sure don't want to have
an "old" lens that limits the resolution.
