Hi all,

The idea of an OM book, gathering together as much of the collective list knowledge of our favoured camera system as possible, was mooted about two years ago, shortly after I joined the list. The idea was very popular, and an editorial board was formed, with Gary Reese as editor-in-chief. A comprehensive list of what people would like to see was formed, and for a while it sounded like an exciting and interesting project that was going places. Unfortunately, in the end, there was a fatal shortage of people who could definitely commit to writing, and the idea was shelved.

Later, Richard Man revived the idea, suggesting it might be done with a 'wiki' system (www.wiki.org), where everyone can write and revise sections via the web. This would decentralise the whole thing, and allow the project to grow at its own pace, as and when people had the time to contribute.

The other day I chanced across something that made me think again of the OM book: Cafe Press, a website via which you can self-publish books. You can do loads of other things as well, it's worth a look at the whole site, but the book publishing info is here: http://www.cafepress.com/cp/info/sell/books.aspx

What I'm wondering is if anyone is still interested in the idea of creating an OM book? The depth of knowledge on this list is, as we all know, phenomenal. If there's any group of people who could start a project like this and make it work, it's this list. Creating content via 'wiki' and then potentially publishing that content at a reasonable price via Cafe Press would be a fantastic way to preserve the wit and wisdom of the list.

Just wondering what everyone else thinks? Is the idea dead, or would there be interest in at least starting off a set of wiki pages to see what happens? I've still got the proposed table of contents that was produced the first time round, and it would make for a great book.

Roger
