And how about Topcons?

Which Takumar? Which Zuiko? Both were made over many years. The Zuiko went through at least 5 variations and moved from rather mediocre (at least the very early one I had) to outstanding performance over that time. I imagine the Takumar went through similar transformations. I'm sure a late Zuiko is better than an early Takumar and vice versa. There were tremendous improvements in lenses over that period.

I had a girlfriend for a few years who took really outstanding travel photos with a match needle Pentax and a single lens, a 50mm Takumar, probably the 1.8 you refer to. Not a bad camera, but still bigger and heavier than an OM-1. Pretty good lens, based on the slides she had, but I never looked that closely. They illustrated one truth about photography. It the subject, composition and basic focus and exposure are good enough, most people won't notice minor technical weaknesses.

You left out Exaktas and Alpas. They too were big, and while the former was good, even groundbreaking in its time, the latter was a lovely thing, even if the film advance was bass akwards. Would that I could get my hands on an Alpa outfit today for less than a king's ransom!

And now for a bit of heresy: I say the old Takumar 50/1.8 is better than the Zuiko 50/1.8. So there.
