Moose,
I think we're in broad agreement here, except that I don't believe Oly see
us as a special case. it's the rather higher number of users of other
systems that they're after.
Personally I would love to see the adaptor out right now, although I can't
see why it has to be stop - down. Preset would be pretty easy to achieve in
the space they have.
I have no plans to go digital any time soon, but the adaptor would bring
some reassurance. I'm sure it will appear some time, but they are making it
pretty clear that they don't believe that the time is now.
In terms of project appraisal, however, no - one would factor us in as a
make - or - break on a digital system. OM users are either not sufficiently
laden with lenses to worry about dumping what they probably bought in the
'70s or, like us FEW listees, over - devoted to a dead system (which Oly
aren't wanting to breathe any life into) and not really good candidates. The
techno - chasers went elsewhere years ago. The guy with an E*S round his
neck and a bit of OM in the attic is not going to rush out and buy an E1
because of an OM adaptor for stop - down metering. He will hopefully buy it
because it represents a better digital tool than the E*S equivalent, and he
can get a pretty full kit for less than an E*S1d body.
Consider also that even if the adaptor did drum up sufficient numbers, it
would be self - defeating. Of course we would all take the discounted
package. Then we'd use the adaptor for all the really high - margin stuff
Oly want to sell us again. Worse, there is a load of it about. E*S man would
find that an OM auto bellows and head was a great option, and would prefer
to buy it second hand with the OM adaptor than the new one from Oly. Good
for collector values:-)))
And releasing only an OM adaptor would be reinforcing the proprietay
message, whereas Oly are trying to say that this is "the new standard for
digital cameras"
Anyway, I guess they'll do whatever they please. Oly may not have been very
good at the pro end for a few years, but they have been a very effective
corporation, so I presume their marketing people have thought about this one
a bit.:-)

Julian
