That's a new one on me!  Are you using hot, fresh, silver oxide
batteries?  The self-timer uses a bit of power before firing the
shutter, so if your batteries are marginal, the camera will sometimes
begin locking up in self-timer mode before it will shooting "normally"
-- maybe that's affecting the exposures, too.
