I don't know specifics about the Frontier, but I doubt it is impossible to
scan and print without sharpening. Even expensive drum scanners use some
form of USM, although it is VERY sophisticated, with software costing more
than the usual desktop scanner.

Minilab printers generally have adjustable levels of sharpening, although
many operators probably never change settings. I suspect most aren't allowed
to make changes. Settings for USM, saturation, etc. are usually set for a
lower common denominator, and will produce unpleasant side effects for our
cameras with better lenses.
