site under Manfrotto shows exactly what I need. And to cap that I need to go
down town to their shop there this afternoon anyway. I feel just a little
bit silly now <duh>

I ran into the same problem putting an old Bogen head on an even
older Cullmann tripod. I searched on line for a couple of hours
with no luck, then walked into the neighborhood camera store,
intending to ask if they could recommend a solution, but before I
could open my mouth, I spied a package of 1/4" to 3/8" adapters on
a rack of accessories just inside the door. Turns out they're
fairly common. As I recall, they're less than $1 apiece, being
essentially simply a bushing having 1/4" threads inside and 3/8"
threads outside.
If they're still got them -- and I have no reason to think they
wouldn't -- I can pick one up for you and send it across the pond.
