You might try a Tamron SP 24-48 f3.5-3.8 instead. Results are fine, it goes
wider, and I think that the quality is better. Can be difficult to find the
lenshood and the lenscap if they do not come with the lens. I normally use
it as my standard lens, if there is enough light.

Another, but even rarer, alternative that solves the speed problem is the Tokina AT-X 24-40/2.8. Not quite the zoom range of the other 2, but it's missing on the end I don't care much about, as I'll always have something covering the 'standard' 50mm area along anyway. Haven't used it much yet, but it seems optically good and is, of course, bright in the finder. Thanks to Andrew's help in a waay too long currency adventure, I now have the proper hood for it. Build quality and action of both lens and metal clip-on hood are excellent.

You might be surprised by the 35-105/3.5-4.5, 35-70/3.6 and 35-80/2.8 Zuikos, Tamron Asp 35-105/2.8, Tokina AT-X 28-85/3.5-4.5 and RMC 28-85/4, to name a few lenses that can hold their own with primes.
