Recent threads prompt me to toss out a post on the topic at hand. Many here will recall me as a devout OM user and active list member for a while. I actually never stopped my sub to the list...just have been in "lurk mode" for some time now. I don't think I am a typical "gadget geek"and my 6-digit serial numbered original OM-1 I have owned since new put a time stamp on the beginings of my OM fanaticism.

Much as I wanted the E1 to be the second coming of the OM1, I fear it may not be, and know it is not for me right now. Thanks to Stephen, the Can*nenabler, I got to shoot a lot with his D60 earlier this year. One week before the global debut of the E1 I gave up waiting. I went to the dark side and took the plunge for a new 10D body along with a nice "starter lens" in their incredible 70-200/2.8 L (non-IS) and 1.4x converter. I also ordered an OM-to-EOS adapter from Kindai Int. right away.

So far, I have not yet shot with an E1...the store I went to let me play with a body, but they had no lenses at all. All in all it appears to be very well built--definately more solid feeling that the 10D. However, no OM adapter is a show stopper for me. So far I have used my Zuiko 350/2.8 (with and without the Zuiko 1.4XA) and 21/3.5. on the 10D. Yes, metering is stop down...kinda. It seems to work well in aperture priority auto as well (better than in manual mode so far for me). The 10D metering system is okay, but it ain't no OM4. Thankfully instant feedback overcomes any metering issues that may crop up.

The results I am seeing never cease to blow me away. I'm getting 12x18" prints on crystal archive paper from Costco for $2.99 each that are simply amazing. No noise, no jpeg artifacts, superb image quality. I have quite a few 11x14" ilfochromes and cibachromes custom printed from RDP100 or Provia F slides. They are grainy, lack the detail, and simply don't even really compare. Customers notice the results too--club event sales are up, and, equipment costs aside, costs have fallen.

I will have some OM gear FS soon (once I decide what I can part with) and have a bunch of fresh Provia F in the 'fridge I likely wont use before expiration. I'm slipping back to "lurk mode" again now ;-) From the dark side, but still and OM fan...
