I agree about some of the quick attach schemes. Moving the
adapter plates amongst various bits of kit is a PITA, so the
obvious fix is to have an adapter plate attached to everything
that's got a tripod socket. But many adapter plates (Manfrotto's,
for instance) are far too large, heavy and in the way to leave on
the gear when it's off a tripod.

I've used the Cullmann QT stuff for over 20 years with nary a
problem or failure. The QT adapter plates that attach to the gear
are only 1 5/8 in. square and 5/16 in. thick. Even the 300/4.5
and 400/6.3 Zuikos still fit into their hard cases with the plates
attached. Because the plates are so small, there's one on every
motor drive, winder and lens with a tripod collar that I have.
They are almost never in the way, and they're always there for
maximum convenience and minimal fiddling and cussing.

In fact, there's a Cullmann QT adapter more or less permanently
attached to the huge, over-sized Manfrotto QT adapter plate on my
super fantastic, wonderful, don't know how I ever lived without
it, Manfrotto 405 geared head. There's also one on the Gitzo 375
head that's on the Bogen 3001 tripod, and, naturally, there's one
on each of the Cullmann tripods.
