I don't like ball heads for just this reason. You need to hold them while
you tighten down the locking mechanism...then things shift when you let go.
That is mostly a problem when shooting with large telephoto lenses. some
people say you can set the ball friction so you don't need to hold the
camera and lens but I have not found that to work. For really accurate work
the geared head is my choice now. It's gotta be good cause Walt recommended

Any ball head users have trouble with the head shifting when being
locked down? I have to anticipate the shift and focus a couple degrees
to the left before locking down. It usually takes a few tries to end up
with the proper frame with a telephoto mounted. I'm using a manfrotto
proball 308. Maybe I should try something else? The $300 heads aren't in
the budget. Is there anything better for under $100? I need a ball head
for packability. The Giotto medium head looks pretty good.
