Just to clarify, my earlier comments about ball heads were based on use of
Bogen products only. The largest (best??) I had was the Model 3038 which I
thought was a pain in the ass to use. I use some of their smaller ones in a
variety of ways but not for heavy lenses. /jim

Like others have indicated, it may be caused my the QR plate
more than the head. I do experience this with mine, and have
observed that the QR plate isn't usually held as tightly as it
is in the big 3-way head.

As far as expensive QR plates, I have something like three or
four of them. Bought two tripods, so that accounted for two of
them, was given one and bought the fourth. I can load up all of
my cameras with them. It is kinda funny seeing an XA with a hex
plate on the bottom and mounted on a 3221 tripod.

What I want to know is what LARRY recommends. <smile>
