I have not followed the list for a while, so I might have missed any
reference to the latest Photo Techniques magazine article entitled
"'Artistically Weighted Averaging' for Optimal Results" by Mark
Dubovoy. A couple of things of interest. One is his observation that
various meters have widely varying color sensitivity.
The second is the use of multi-spot metering for weighted metering of
the scene. Basically the idea is to multi-spot the scene by taking more
spot readings of the more important elements in the scene. This
technique would work well with the OM-4t.
Back to the first point though, his observation that different meters
have different color sensitivity and I was wondering how the OM-4 meter
compares, both as a spot meter and possibly the effect of film coating
color on OTF metering. More specifically, I was wondering about
metering for B&W film, which can have a more extended frequency
sensitivity. For instance, the Maco's Cube 400c mentioned in the latest
Shutterbug magazine has extended red sensitivity. Mostly I shoot E6
film, which has a tighter frequency characteristic because it is color
film. But I am starting to get back into B&W and the PT article implies
that meter color sensitivity can be widely off.
So the questions I have are:
1) Do we have any idea what the color response is for OM meters?
2) And does anyone have metering related experience using B&W films with
OM meters? Should I be concerned, even?
