My suggestion is a quick release plate system from Kirk or Really Right
Stuff. It solves a host of little tripod problems and will keep your
camera and lens from turning on the screw. I have some pieces from each
system. They are interchangeable. I like Kirk a little better because
some of the pieces seem a little more elegantly designed and lighter
without sacrificing sturdiness. And I seem to find they make stuff for
more cameras and sometimes they are a little cheaper. You will need a
plate for the tripod head and one for the lens. The disadvantage is
that you will end up needing to get one for everything you put on the
tripod. While they are not cheap they are a pleasure to use and
probably as cheap as the Manfrotto alternatives you were thinking about.
I get no Zen from tightening or loosening tripod screws.
