There are many curious things that pop up with digital. It is so
complex. The usual story is that since a smaller sensor crops of the
soft edges the picture is improved, but there are instances where
lenses with middling performance on a reduced size sensor seem to
blossom into great lenses on a full frame sensors. But these things are
anecdotal and there are so many things that affect the image that
besides the gross ones like size that generalizations from comparisons
are sometimes meaningless.
