When my previous employer was participating in a similar promo (Sigma iirc)
we had a stock of junk lenses that would sell for £5 so as to give the punter
something to 'trade-in'. Second hand margin figures looked good on paper as a
result. Ultimately this is a ploy to buoy the 'value' of the camera without
'resorting to' price cutting.
